The 49ers are $3.726 million under the NFL salary cap after the recent signings of kicker Phil Dawson and cornerback Chris Cook, according to a source.
The 49ers on Friday signed Cook, who experienced problems on and off the field during his four seasons with the Minnesota Vikings, to a one-year contract that includes no guaranteed money.
Cook is set to make $730,000 if he remains on the 49ers’ 53-man roster for the entire season. With a minimum-salary benefit, Cooks counts only $570,000 against the 49ers’ salary cap.
Dawson officially signed his two-year, $6.134 million contract on Friday. He received $3 million in guaranteed money, including a $2 million signing bonus. His 2014 salary of $1 million is fully guaranteed. If Dawson remains on the 49ers’ roster on the third day of the 2015 league year, $500,000 of his scheduled $3.234 million salary for next year becomes guaranteed.
The 49ers will gain another $6.6 million in salary-cap space in June as a result of the team’s decision to release cornerback Carlos Rogers with a post-June 1 designation.
