Programming note: For comprehensive 49ers coverage from Santa Clara, tune in to SportsNet Central tonight at 6, 10:30 and midnight on Comcast SportsNet Bay Area.
The 49ers have reached a contract agreement with free-agent running back Alfonso Smith, according to Smith’s Instagram account.
The 49ers are expected to place running back Kendall Hunter on injured reserve with a torn right ACL, which would open a spot on the 90-man roster for Smith, formerly of the Arizona Cardinals. In addition. LaMichael James is expected to miss a month with a dislocated elbow.
Smith (6 foot 1, 209 pounds) appeared in all 16 games for the Cardinals last season. He carried the ball 18 times for 54 yards and one touchdown. He also caught 10 passes for 68 yards. He played 131 only snaps on offense the entire season, but was a core special-teams player. Smith played nearly half of all special-teams plays for the Cardinals.
Smith appeared in 43 games for the Cardinals in four seasons after signing as an undrafted free agent from Kentucky. On his Instagram account, he posted a photo Monday of the 49ers logo with the caption, "I'm a Niner Babeeeeee!"
The 49ers return to practice Tuesday morning after a day off on Monday.
